Armenia-Russia Ties Continue to Grow Despite Political Changes in Yerevan – Ambassador
/Sept 21/Sputnik News Service, Russia/

MOSCOW – The relations between Armenia and Russia continue to develop despite serious political changes in Yerevan, Armenian Ambassador to Russia Vardan Toganyan said on Friday.

“Today, after major changes in the domestic political system, after the revolution, our young government undoubtedly ascertains an even deeper growth of ties with Russia … We state that today we are on the verge of developing and promoting our relations in all spheres,” Toganyan said at a reception on the occasion of Armenia’s Independence Day.

At the same time, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said at the event that Moscow was committed to developing its partnership with Yerevan.

The political crisis in Armenia broke out in April after ex-President Serzh Sargsyan was nominated as prime minister. This was largely regarded as a way for Sargsyan, who previously served as president for two terms, to stay in power. Soon afterward, Sargsyan resigned amid large-scale anti-government protests.

Oppositon leader Nikol Pashinyan became prime minister in early May. The new head of government already has held numerous meetings with the Russian leadership since assuming the post with both sides expressing readiness to strengthen the long-term partnership.

/Sept 26/PanArmenian/

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met Iran’s leader Hassan Rouhani to discuss issues of mutual interest and regional cooperation on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations, Mehr says.

Rouhani highly regarded the trust between the two governments and nations, adding that “despite the vast capabilities of the two countries, the level of economic cooperation between Tehran and Yerevan is not desirable.”

He said Iran is ready to cooperate with Armenia in energy swaps and that “extensive capacities of the two countries stressed the necessity of bringing it into the level of political.”

“Iran highly regards connection with the Black Sea through Armenia and Georgia, and the South-North corridor is of great importance in this regard, and Tehran is ready to complete this corridor and highway in terms of technical and engineering services.”

Rouhani also urged strengthening cooperation between the two countries’ private sectors, adding, “We are ready to encourage the private sector to engage in business in Armenia and facilitate Armenian companies’ investment.”

Armenian PM, in turn, also expressed condolences on the martyrdom of a number of Iranians in Ahvaz terrorist attack, saying, “we are ready to develop relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and we must use all potentialities in the development of these cooperation and make a leap in relations, especially in economic fields.”

Eurasian Economic Union could get WTO observer status in two years, says EEC chief
/Sept 26/168.am/

It could take the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) approximately two years to be granted an observer status at the World Trade Organization (WTO), Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), the executive body of the EEU, Tigran Sargsyan said in an interview to TASS.

“First of all we must get the agreement of our countries, and then we will submit this proposal to the heads of states. After they will give consent, we will address the World Trade Organization. I believe this will take maximum two years,” he said.

Sargsyan emphasized that four of the five members of the EEU are full members of the WTO. This means that whenever there is a debate at the WTO on customs tariffs or any issues relating to mutual trade obstacles, these countries cannot undertake such negotiations on their own because this authority is vested in the EEC.

“Our countries, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, also invite us to take part in those debates for the EEU’s general stance to be presented, because now they cannot make decisions on decrease or increase of tariffs. And because both Kyrgyzstan and Armenia have initially been members of the WTO, and then became participants of the EEU, certain issues arise here which require agreed decisions with all countries. And from this perspective, certainly, our participation in WTO debates will be productive and useful for all,” Sargsyan said.

Forecast: Armenia and Israel will successfully cooperate after regime change and completion of crisis in Iran
/Sept 26/Arminfo/David Stepanyan/

Armenia and Israel will successfully interact after the regime change and, accordingly, the end of the crisis in Iran. An Israeli publicist, public figure, political commentator Avigdor Eskin expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.

Commenting on possible reasons for non-attendance of Armenia during the Caucasian tour on September 12-17 of Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman to Georgia and Azerbaijan, the expert noted cases when Israeli politicians were sent only to Georgia or only to Armenia. According to his estimates, this can not be due to Yerevan’s refusal to join the anti-Iran sanctions and create a free trade zone on the border with Iran. In the case of the development of relations between Armenia and Israel, Eskin considers the visits of Israeli high-ranking leaders to Armenia quite possible.

“But who among the Armenian ministers visited Israel in recent years?” Relations between our countries are developing sluggishly. “” The Armenian Ambassador to Israel “is in Yerevan at all.” By the way, what did he do in a few months of work? “He asked.

At the same time, personally, to Eskin, cooperation with Armenia is interesting. Noting Israel’s undeniable world leadership in science-intensive technologies, and the very high intellectual potential of Armenia, the Israeli expert believes that Yerevan and Jerusalem could successfully interact. At the same time, Israel, in his opinion, should understand, Armenia is now in a state of protracted crisis. But there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia supports responsible business in Armenia
/Sept 28/168.am/

The American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia (AmCham) is the leading business association in the country with more than 120 members from all business segments. Through advocacy efforts in various areas AmCham promotes a healthy business and investment environment in Armenia for all sectors of the economy its members represent.

AmCham believes that sustainable businesses, which are closely connected to healthy economic, social and environmental systems, can create economic value and contribute to healthy ecosystems and strong communities.

In this respect, AmCham welcomed the Government’s announced commitment to promote responsible practices and international standards in the mining sector in Armenia. AmCham believes that responsible mining, based on ICMM, IFC, EBRD and other internationally recognized standards and frameworks, can be a viable part of the Armenian economy. As stated before, we believe that AmCham members like Lydian Armenia, which counts EBRD among its shareholders, already comply with these standards. Moreover, AmCham welcomes the protection of biodiversity and expects all member companies to comply with the law.

While AmCham welcomes professional and impartial audits in the mining sector, the developments of the last few months have raised some concerns.

While the head of the State Inspection of Environment and Mining claimed new ecological factors and publicly called to halt the project, the Minister of Environmental Protection refuted those findings. We consider it of utmost importance to ensure that such premature statements that are not based on sound scientific data do not send controversial messages to the market.

AmCham also regrets that the roads to Amulsar remain blocked for more than three months and Lydian Armenia is deprived of its legal right to operate. While concerns around the industry are understandable, AmCham expects that these concerns be addressed through legal means and in a fair and professional manner. We also expect to see standards be applied equally and fairly to all players in the industry.

As a business organization, AmCham looks forward to seeing a viable, responsible and sustainable mining sector in Armenia. In this regard a level playing field and the transparent, predictable and non-discriminatory application of the law are vital.
