Armenia to expedite negotiations over creation of free trade zone between Eurasian Economic Union and Egypt
/Oct 24/ARKA/

YEREVAN – Armenia will expedite negotiations over creation of a free trade zone between the Eurasian Economic Union and Egypt, the EEC Minister Veronika Nikishina said Tuesday at a news conference in Yerevan.
In her words, there is an informal arrangement inside the Eurasian Economic Union, in accordance to which each country expedites one or another negotiation.
She said Armenia has expedited negotiations over creation of a free trade zone with Iran and has completed them quite successfully and quickly by involving soft power in them.
“Therefore, we want to use this experience and the Armenian vice premier agreed to be a similar expeditor also in negotiations with Egypt, and we hope they will be successful as well,” Nikishina said.
More than 40 countries, she said, have applied for establishing of free trade zones with the Eurasian Economic Union, but the union chooses partners which can ensure results.
A special working group gauges the reasonability and benefit from such free trade zones and then provides the conclusion to the Eurasian Economic Union countries leaders.
“This carries also certain risks also for competitiveness of the union countries’ goods, which should be protected, and this issue, too, is under negotiation now,” Nikishina said. “This should apply to those segments which can be stricken hard by import of Egypt goods.”

"I understand that the new government was very busy during summer on July and August. What can I say is that annual 2018 action plan is the reflection of what we did we the previous government. The new team has introduced some changes which were acceptable to us. So I think, that we are quite satisfied with the way we have been cooperating with the new government, because the new government has shown flexibility and pragmatism in terms of continuing the work we started before. We are also discussing with the new government the new package of our assistance, annual action plan 2019,” said the EU ambassador, adding that the new government has drawn quite wide range of maneuvers to define priorities in the implementation of economic programs with the EU.

"We also offered the new government the possibility to review budget support programs. It was also something unprecedented, because normally we do not offer such possibility whenever change in government happens, but we understand what happened in Armenia was quite a big change," he added.

The EU ambassador noted with satisfaction that they had received a comprehensive paper from the new government on the government's development in different areas.

According to him, at first glance they got a good impression from these proposals and their demands will be accepted by the EU.
