Head of the CIS Executive Committee Yevgeny Sloboda voiced hope that the upcoming snap parliamentary elections in Armenia due on December 9 will be free and democratic, he told reporters at a briefing in CEC today.
To the question, how many observers from the CIS will monitor the elections, Sloboda said that the accreditation of observers is not over yet.
"It will be over on November 24. We are planning to have 70-72 observers. Last year there were 76 of us. Let me tell you that it was quite enough for the mission in Armenia. There are well-trained observers among them: Russian State Duma deputies, members of the electoral commissions of all levels, "said Yevgeny Sloboda, expressing hope that this time they will also be able to conduct a proper observation mission.
At the same time he informed that they will carry out long-term observation mission with about 20 partners.
Sloboda noted that by now, candidates from Belarus, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan have been included in the observation mission. Representatives from Moldova and Uzbekistan may participate, too. Ukraine and Azerbaijan will not participate in the observation mission.
Yevgeny Sloboda was unable to predict the CIS observation mission’s assessment, which is usually given after the elections. He only recalled that the CIS mission did not have serious remarks during the previous elections, except for the cases of violations observed in separate polling stations.

My Step bloc enjoys sky-high approval rating, Republicans have lowest support ahead of election – Gallup
/Nov 23/ArmenPress.com/

YEREVAN – A survey conducted by Gallup International Association in Armenia ahead of the general election shows that respondents treat Im Kayl (My Step) bloc completely positively, while the Republican Party (HHK) has the highest anti-rating.

52,7% of respondents expressed complete positive attitude for Im Kayl, while 32,9% expressed more positive approach for the bloc, Gallup International Association’s Armenia member MPG director Aram Navasardyan said.

“The Republican Party of Armenia has the highest anti-rating, 2,9% expressed complete positive attitude, 16,5% more negative, while 66,3% absolutely negative,” he said.

The survey was conducted in-person among 1111 people.

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resigned on October 16 to trigger the process of disbanding the parliament.

Pashinyan took office after massive protests in April forced president-turned PM Serzh Sargsyan to resign. But Sargsyan’s Republican Party (HHK) still has most seats in the 105-seat parliament. Since taking office, Nikol Pashinyan has numerously said that the incumbent parliament doesn’t represent the people and that early elections should take place as soon as possible.

In accordance to the Constitution, when a Prime Minister resigns the parliament must elect a new PM within two weeks. Lawmakers deliberately failed to elect a new PM as a formality in order to pave the way for dissolution.

The last round took place on November 1 and the parliament was dissolved by virtue of law.

Later on the same day, President Armen Sarkissian signed an order on dissolving the parliament and calling early elections on December 9.

The parliament will function until the new parliament is elected.

The government is formally a caretaker government until a new government is formed after the election.

YEREVAN – Im Kayl (My Step) bloc attaches importance to maintaining the principle of gender equality.

Candidate for parliament from My Step Gayane Abrahamyan told a press conference today that women’s rights issues are multi-layered, and this issue won’t be solved only by granting quotas.

She said that gender equality principle is the main ideological basis of their bloc, on which future programs will be built.

Candidate for parliament Anna Kostanyan from Lusavor Hayastan (Bright Armenia) party, in turn, said that the women’s rights topic requires massive and in-depth studies. “If I [get elected] to parliament, I will be coherent in designing and revising the thesis of the women’s rights protection law,” she said.
