/Jan 23/ArmenPress.am/

YEREVAN – International tourist arrivals grew 6% in 2018, totaling 1.4 billion according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. UNWTO’s long term forecast issued in 2010 indicated the 1.4 billion mark would be reached in 2020, yet the remarkable growth of international arrivals in recent years has brought it two years ahead, RIA Novosti reports.

In relative terms, the Middle East (+10%), Africa (+7%), Asia and the Pacific and Europe (both at +6%) led growth in 2018. Arrivals to the Americas were below the world average (+3%).

International tourist arrivals in Europe reached 713 million in 2018. Asia and the Pacific (+6%) recorded 343 million international tourist arrivals in 2018. The Americas (+3%) welcomed 217 million international arrivals in 2018, with mixed results across destinations. Data from Africa points to a 7% increase in 2018 (North Africa at +10% and Sub-Saharan +6%), reaching an estimated 67 million arrivals.

“The growth of tourism in recent years confirms that the sector is today one of the most powerful drivers of economic growth and development”, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said. “This is why UNWTO is focusing 2019 on education, skills and job creation”, he added.

According to him, yet stronger economic growth, more affordable air travel, technological changes, new businesses models and greater visa facilitation around the word have accelerated growth in recent years.

/Jan 24/Verelq.am/

Yerevan plans construction of bypass roads to facilitate traffic
/Jan 26/ArmenPress.am/

YEREVAN, – Yerevan City authorities are considering several projects for facilitating the city’s transportation traffic.

Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan, accompanied by Minister of Transportation, Communication and Information Technologies Hakob Arshakyan, visited a number of sections of the capital where bypassing roads are planned to be constructed, the City Hall said.

According to the City Hall, the construction plan under consideration has been designed back in the Soviet years. The M15 project will link the province of Ararat with the province of Kotayk – thus enabling motorists not to enter Yerevan and by bypassing the Erebuni and Nor Nork districts.

“We know very well that today almost all roads pass through Yerevan, we also know the situation regarding heavy traffic”, the Mayor said.

“The goal is for vehicles that pass through Yerevan now, but whose destination isn’t to reach Yerevan, to have alternative roads and not enter downtown. This is very important not only for the development of the capital, but generally for the development of Armenia’s roads and the economy”, he said.

Another project under consideration is linking Davitashen district with the Kanaker Zeytun district, at the same time enabling to visit Kotayk province.

“We must view Armenia as one whole in terms of both economy, road construction and infrastructure. We are discussing with Mr. Marutyan the issue of bypassing roads for Yerevan”, Minister Arshakyan said, adding that the projects will be studied in detail to determine efficiency.

The roads are envisaged to be multi-lane, with bridges.

According to Mayor Marutyan, the City Hall is also negotiating with the Asian Development Bank for building new road links near the Hayrenik Cinema Theater and the Circus

/Jan 29/ArmenPress.am/

YEREVAN – The Armenian PM finds his Davos visit for the World Economic Forum to be quite full with meetings and discussions.

Speaking to the Russian RBK TV, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that concrete ideas are under discussion.

“Davos is a good arena where leaders of different countries of the world and business representatives meet hold discussions. I met with businessmen from Russia and other countries. I had meetings with representatives of a number of European and Asian countries. I’ve brought concrete ideas from there, that require further discussions. Particularly, there is an idea concerning the opening of a Marriott hotel at the Iran-Armenia border. Since Marriott’s policy is that they don’t build and don’t buy real estate, but rather rent territory, therefore in order to fulfill this idea it is necessary to find an investor who will agree to build a building, will agree the project with Marriott, and to whom it will then rent the area,” the PM said.

The Armenian PM also mentioned concrete ideas that were discussed with Russian businessmen.

Particularly, with VTB bank the sides discussed the exploitation of the Teghut mine, in order to involve a new professional operator. VTB is managing the Teghut mine since 2018.

Pashinyan also noted discussions with the Russian Fund of Direct Investments. He said that interesting ideas exist here also.

“A rather great interest exists currently for Armenia, and we hope that this will lead to new investments,” he said.
