Armenian prison population stands at 2,226 people

YEREVAN – According to Armenia’s Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan, a total of 2,266 people are incarcerated currently, including 963 arrested and 1,303 convicted persons. 
Speaking at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, he said the country’s prisons could accommodate as many as 5,600 people.
According to the minister, 10 prisoners are on hunger strike now, having put forward various demands. 
Zeynalyan said prison staff conducts regular checks to detect illegally stored objects, such as mobile phones, alcohol and drugs.
The minister said also the number of food parcels brought by relatives to the convicts has significantly decreased after an improvement in the quality of food served to convicts.
"I make periodical visits to correction institutions and check the quality of food. Special attention is paid to its caloric content," he added.
Zeynalyan also spoke about the planned reorganization of prison institutions, noting that prisoners convicted for life or for serious crimes are prohibited from contacting other prisoners, and measures are being taken to gradually isolate them to prevent psychological impact.
"We initiated legislative changes to introduce a phased change of security so that the conditions of the convicted person could change in accordance with his behavior," he said.
 

Armenia suicide attempts increase by 20% in one year

YEREVAN. – Suicide attempts in Armenia have increased by 20 percent in one year, Rescue Service Captain Tigran Sargsyan noted at a press conference on Friday. 

In his words, there were 500 suicide attempts in the country last year, and 108 of them had a tragic end.

“Primarily, men aged between 40 and 60 have committed suicide [in Armenia],” Sargsyan noted, in particular.

He informed that the greatest number of suicide attempts in the country were recorded in capital city Yerevan as well as in Shirak and Lori Provinces. 

Sargsyan added that, nonetheless, Armenia has a lower respective indicator, as compared with some other countries in the region and the rest of the world. 

“Armenia is 150th in the world [in this regard],” he explained. “The leader in the region with this indicator is Azerbaijan, Iran and Armenia follow; Georgia has the lowest indicator [in the region].”


World Bank to assist Armenian government in reforming health system

YEREVAN – Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan and Sylvie Bossoutrot, World Bank Country Manager for Armenia, met last week to look into a string of issues related to development and implementation of the health insurance system in Armenia. Health Minister Arsen Torosyan was also in attendance, the press service of the Armenian government reported.
Avinyan was quoted as saying that the government has sufficient opportunities and the will to implement such reforms, which will significantly raise the level of well-being of the country's citizens. One of these projects is the introduction of health insurance, he said.
Torosyan said in turn that he held discussions on this issue with international partners to identify the advantages and disadvantages of health insurance systems, run by various countries. He said the discussions will continue at the level of a working group being created.
According to Ms. Bossoutrot, the World Bank attaches great importance to the Armenian health sector and is ready to assist the government in implementing reforms in this area.
Earlier, Arsen Torosyan said the country would switch to comprehensive health insurance system in 2021. According to him, the key principles of the ongoing reform of the sector are to guarantee social justice in the health sector and combine the packages of health services provided to citizens.
 

ԵՄ-ից 2018-ին ապաստան հայցող ՀՀ քաղաքացիների թիվը 3 անգամ կրճատվել է

2018 թվականին Եվրոպական միության երկրներից ապաստան հայցող ՀՀ քաղաքացիների թիվը նվազել է ավելի քան երեք անգամ:

«Եվրոստատի» տվյալներով՝ 2018 թվականին ԵՄ երկներից ապաստան է հայցել ՀՀ 2190 քաղաքացի, մինչդեռ 2017 թվականին այդ թիվը կազմել է 6805:

Ընդ որում, անցնող տարում Հայաստանը, Հարավային Կովկասի երկրների շարքում վերջին տեղում է ապաստան հայցողների թվով. Նախորդ տարում ԵՄ-ից ապաստան է հայցել Ադրբեջանի 2580 քաղաքացի, Վրաստանի՝ 8275 քաղաքացի :

2016 թվականին ապաստան հայցած քաղաքացիների թիվը կազմել է 7745, որը վերջին 10 տարում գրանցված ամենաբարձր ցուցանիշն է:

Armenia is the fourth on a number of migrants in Russia, the statistical agency of Russia reported.

Overall, 14. 358 Armenians migrated to Russia last year.

The new leader is Tajikistan with 31,000 migrants coming to Russia in 2018. The second is Kazakhstan, and the third is Ukraine.
 

School teachers in Armenia to have their salaries increased in September – minister

YEREVAN, February 28. /ARKA/. Armenian Education and Science Minister Arayik Harutyunyan posted Thursday on his Facebook page that school teachers’ salaries are planned to be increased in September. 
One day earlier, after discussing the education sector’s problems with My Step parliamentary faction members, Harutyunyan said that the increase of teachers’ wages is among the ministry’s top-priority objectives. 
He also said that the teachers training system will be introduced in the country. 
“Upon completing the trainings, teachers will have their salaries increased by 50%”, the minister wrote on his Facebook page.
