ARMENIA 38TH IN 2010 INDEX OF ECONOMIC FREEDOM

The U.S. Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with The Wall Street Journal, has released the 2010 Index of Economic Freedom.
The authors estimate the economic freedom in 179 countries. Such indices as business freedom, trade, fiscal and monetary policy, investment freedom, labor market and corruption are taken into account.
The countries are raked as "repressed" (less than 50 points), "mostly unfree" (50-60), "moderately free" (60-70), "mostly free" (70-80), and "free" (more than 80 points).
Armenia ranks 38th (69.2), Azerbaijan 96th (58.8), Russia 143rd (50.3), Georgia 26th (70.4), and Turkey 27th (63.8).
Hong Kong (89.7), Singapore (86.1), Australia (82.6) and New Zealand (82.1) top the rankings.
ARMENIAN WOMEN PROVED TO BE GREAT MANAGEMENT LEADERS

CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERGROUND CAR PARK IN LIBERTY SQUARE TO FINISH IN MAY

It is designed for 500 cars and costs 4 billion 150 million drams.
Construction work started in the 4th quarter of 2008.

FINANCIAL OMBUDSMAN OFFICE SOLVES 70% OF CLAIMS EXAMINED OVER PAST YEAR IN FAVOR OF CLIENTS

The RA Financial Ombudsman Office solved 70% of claims accepted for examination over the past year in favor of clients who received over 23 million drams (about .5 thousand USD) as compensation for reconciliation, RA Financial Ombudsperson Piruz Sargsyan announced at the Janaury 25 event dedicated to the first anniversary of the Financial Ombudsman Office’s foundation.
In her words, in 2009 the Financial Ombudsman Office received 378 complaints against financial organizations, as well as numerous complaints not related to financial organizations.
Speaking about work to be done in 2010, P. Sargsyan pointed out a forum to be held jointly with CBA on April 5-7, to which Financial Ombudsmen of the UK, France, and the Netherlands, and representatives of financial supervision bodies of CIS countries will be invited.
She said that the active campaign to cover the activities of their office will continue - with the participation of residents of Armenian regions.

MOSCOW TO GRANT ABKHAZIA $330 MLN OVER 3 YEARS

Russia will provide Abkhazia financial assistance worth over 10 billion rubles ($330 million) in the next three years.
This year Abkhazia would receive about 1.9 billion rubles ($62 million). He stressed that Russia sought to boost Abkhazia’s economy not only with financial assistance but also with Russian investment.
4323 PEOPLE GOT RA CITIZENSHIP IN 2009

Under RA President’s decree, 4323 people were granted RA citizenship in 2009.
Otherwise 191.451 passports were handed last year, 178.092 passports were produced by regional services of passport and visa department.
TOURISM IN ARMENIA UP BY 3%

According to a statement by the National Statistical Service, 575,281 tourists came to Armenia during the months of January-December 2009, as compared to 558,443 tourists for the same period in 2008. This indicates that the number of tourists to Armenia is up by 3%.
For the same period in 2009, 526,193 individuals left the Republic of Armenia for vacations. As compared to 2008, this number is up by 2.1%.
ARMENIA RECEIVED $51 MILLION IN HUMANITARIAN AID IN 2009

In 2009, Armenia has received approximately 8,611 tonnes of goods in humanitarian assistance, with a value of 18 billion 861.2 million AMD or $51 million USD.
According to data released by the RA National Statistical Service, 34.7% of the goods received have been in the chemistry and, connected with that, industry sectors ; 17.3% in equipment ; 15.7% in textiles ; and 4.6% in machinery and so on, with the remaining 27.7% going to other products.
BIRTH RATE BOOSTS IN ARMENIA

The birth rate in ten maternity homes in Yerevan hit 1636 in January, 2010.
According to the head Mother and Child Healthcare department the rate of birth grew by 3000 in 2009, as compared to 2008.
18.778 pregnant women were registered for consultations last year, against 16.017 in 2008.
Birth rate growth was recorded in the republic : 41 454 children were born in 2008, while the index shows decline by 1135 in 2007.
